Measuring temperature in the sea is important because this helps identify water masses and their origin. Various instruments have been developed to measure temperaure at depth inbthe ocean, including reversing mercury thermometers and more recently electronic sensors.

This picture Temperature sensors Mk1 bottom pressure recorder.jpg shows a box of spare temerature sensors for use with the original deep sea tide gauge.
