The metal ball that tops the roof of the light house almost look like a symbol for the dominant role the observation and navigation work carried out in these buildings. Firstly the upright stick is a cross, a symbol that could point to christian religion. It is stuck on top of a cupper ball that almost looks like a globe. Together they resemble what is known as a Globe Cross. "The Globe Cross or Triumphal Cross is an orb surmounted with a cross. Its orb represents Christs' reign over the world, and it is often shown atop Christ's scepter in Christian art.
